El Palmar, Valencia

We are the El Roig family

We have lived on the Albufera for generations. We are fishermen and rice farmers, and we know the natural park from the inside.

Born on the lake

El Palmar is a different kind of village. It is surrounded by water: the Albufera lake to the west, rice fields to the north and south, the Mediterranean to the east. The El Roig family was born here and has lived here for generations.

For decades our family made its living from artisanal fishing on the Albufera: eels, mullet and crabs. We know the lake in detail, with its currents and the light of every hour and every season.

In time we saw that the best way to keep all this alive was to show it. That is how the boat trips began, so that visitors can see the Albufera the way we see it.

Who is El Roig

Luis Marco Bru, “El Roig”, is the founder of Paseos El Roig. He has been a fisherman, rice farmer, hunter and boatman in El Palmar, and for many years he worked at the Racó de l’Olla, the information centre of the Albufera Natural Park.

His advice, always: the Albufera is for enjoying slowly, without hurry, appreciating every detail of the nature around it.

What we write in our Albufera of Valencia guide carries his signature.

Our values

Rooted in the place

El Palmar is our home. We have lived from this lake and its traditions for generations, and it shows on every trip.

Small scale

We are a family, not a mass-tourism company. We tell you what we know about the lake, and every trip turns out different.

Tradition

The Valencian barraca, the wooden boat and artisanal fishing are part of our history, and we want them not to be lost.

Personal attention

A personal welcome and time to answer your questions. We don’t want your visit to feel like a product off an assembly line.

The Valencian barraca

Our Valencian barraca stands next to the pier, and you can see it when you arrive or when you come back from the trip. It is one of the few left standing in El Palmar, and we keep it as a record of how people built and lived on the lake.

It is a good place to stop for a while and get a feel for how the Albufera families lived.
